Friday Five LIX: Day Job

Christopher wrote this late at night:

The most Friday Fives have given me a feeling of deja vu. This week’s is no different.

1. What do you do for a living?
I’m a teacher. I teach. Or at least I pretend to. This year I taught third grade, I hope I am teaching third grade next year. That remains to be seen.

2. What do you like most about your job?
It is always changing. It is never the same. And I like getting to know 20 to 30 kids.

3. What do you like least about your job?
Grading papers. Politics. Grading papers. Its highly emotional nature at times. Grading papers. In-service meetings. Grading papers.

4. When you have a bad day at work it’s usually because _____…
A parent has cussed me out when I didn’t deserve it. Or dealing with discipline problems. Or the day before an extended break.

5. What other career(s) are you interested in?
Media. That cover quite a bit.

Tell me about your job in the comments.

Class dismissed!

I’ve let things affect my attitude.

I write software, but I enjoy teaching, mostly other developers though I’ve done stuff on bloging at cstone and lecured about the nature of the net for MIS course at the U of A.

    - Peace

Dave what kind of software do you write? What is it for?

    Flip Says:

    1. “Pharmacology/inflammation research”, to put it in flashy terms. “Trying to figure out things I have no idea about” is probably more correct. That’s what science is about, more or less, I think.

    2. Very independent and varied.

    3. Laboratory work, unfortunaley

    4. An experiment fails after days of preparations

    5. Pretty much anything that involves reading and learning. Possibly teaching, but I’m not very patient with people who don’t want to learn, so I’m not sure I’d be a good teacher.

    Anna Says:

    1. What do I do? I teach. More specifically, preschool special education. Up until Christmas, I was the classroom teacher. My school has juggled positions, and I am now the speech/language implementer.

2.What do I like most? Seeing progress in the little ones is usually so easy. Because every day is a new adventure for preschoolers, they make new discoveries and observations. Some are wonderful, some not so much. (”Miss Nanna, you know my daddy has hair in him nose?”)

    3. What do I dislike? Well, most recently, pepper spray. Hmmm…that might be a good post. On most days, it is writing and monitoring IEPs (the special ed paperwork)

    4. When I have a bad day, it is because…
My bad days usually are based upon the severity of body fluids I end up with. Some days I end up basically dry and clean, but there are always a few days when the body functions really get going and they somehow end up all over me. Also, I sometimes have to restrain kids from hurting themselves or others. You wouldn’t think that holding a preschooler in a certain position for a few minutes (or 30!) would take a lot of energy…but it does.

    5. Other careers: something in the publishing field, maybe writing novels or editing. I would also maybe be interested in curriculum design or some sort of educational consultant for kids’ shows.
