Again With the Trying to Stay Awake

Friday, December 31st, 2004

Here we go again. {Pressed} said that we weren’t going to do it again. He said as much on my blog. Don’t believe me? Check the comments on these two posts.

There they are. As plain as day. Then WHY IN TARNATION ARE WE GETTING READY TO DO IT AGAIN? Why?

This year we have added skiing to the list of activities. From 10pm. To. 3am. Am I the only on that thinks that this is totally insane?

This can’t end well. In fact it will probably end in a similar fashion to last year’s Insomnia Fest:

It is still dark outside but with an hour and a half to go, I think I can safely say that I have tamed the wretched creature.

After that time, I will go home and willing, even gladly give myself over to that fangoriously, gelatinous brute.

On a final note, may the angus be kind to you on this melon wrapped with foil, shiny foil.

Seminary rallying!

UPDATE: It is 4:50 pm and the youth have been bowling and I have won a game on my new SceneIt! TV Edition. Sweet.

Spaghetti Cheese

Thursday, December 30th, 2004

And now for some good eats.

This recipe was created by the daughter of a former pastor at my church. She created this delectable dish for a contest. It won.

Let’s take a look at the software:

  • One boiled chicken that has been de-boned and de-skinned
  • One cooked package of spaghetti, 10-12 ounces
  • One stick of butter
  • One medium onion chopped
  • One medium green pepper chopped
  • One cup celery chopped
  • One can of tomato soup
  • One can of mushroom soup
  • 8 ounces of Velveeta cheese
  • One cup of chicken broth

The steps:

  • Boil, de-bone and shred the chicken. Retain one cup of broth.
  • Saute in one stick of butter the onion, green pepper, and celery till tender. (Most of the time, I add mushrooms.)
  • Then add the cans of tomato and mushroom soups and the chicken broth. Stir well.
  • Cube and add the Velveeta cheese to the mixture. Heat until cheese is melted.
  • Add the cheese mixture and the chicken to the cooked spaghetti and stir.

Eat and enjoy. I usually add salt to taste. Sometimes it needs it, other times it does not. This makes a ton of food, however, the good thing about this is it makes for good leftovers.

I think we tried it once with the addition of Ro*tel to the mix but I didn’t like it.

Try it You will like it.

Top 10 List 2004: TV

Wednesday, December 29th, 2004

Earlier lists:

Airline10. Airline (A&E)
We have a COS (cutomer of size) trying to board the plane with only one seat. This reality show about the crazy things that happen in several of the larger Southwest Airlines terminals around the US. Dealing with drunks, flight delays, missed flights, angry passengers, and of course the customers of size that are required to purchase two seats. There certianly plenty of drama to fuel a show, too bad LAX couldn’t be as interesting as this show.

Star Trek: Enterprise 9. Star Trek: Enterprise (UPN)
I liked last season. I think I was the only one who did. The big story arch was interesting. The ending of las season, not so good. I have also enjoyed this season as well. The mini three episode story archs work well. I enjoyed Brent Spiner’s guest appearance. Looking at the ratings for this season, I think I can pretty much say this will be the last season. I don’t think that is such a bad thing, it may be a good time for Star Trek to take a little rest.

Jack and Bobby8. Jack and Bobby (WB)
Another show that is rating deprived. This show about a future president is struggling to find an audience. I think if the show were to focus more on the boys than hyper-liberal mom, it would be more successful. The most interesting thing about the show are the flash forwards interviews with President Bobby’s future staff. They sure have imagined a bleak future for the US. It is a good thing they created the prefect middle of the road president to lead us through those tough times.

Boston Legal7. Boston Legal (ABC)
David E. Kelley brought back his show The Practice from the edge of cancellation. He replaced half the cast and toward the end of The Practice’s last season be began preparing for his next show, Boston Legal. He moved the amoral (most of the time) attornrey Alan Shore moved left for a new law firm run by William Shatner’s crazy Denny Crane. What do I like about Boston Legal? The crazy characters especially Denny.

The 44006. The 4,400 (Scifi)
All of a sudden 4,400 people who have been reported missing suddenly show together not having aged a day, and that is saying something when some have them been gone since the 1940’s. Most people believe that these people have been returned from aliens. For what purpose? No one knows and most normal folk are scared of these people. Even stranger, the returned have gained special abilities like the ability to heal people, control electricity, extreme strength, etc. The mini-series explores these people trying to return to a life of normality and trying to figure out what happened to them while they were gone. I was quite disappointed that this was only a mini-series. It was well written (by some former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine scripters), well produced, and engaging series. Of course I was elated to discover that more episodes are being produced! Sweet.

Iron Chef America5. Iron Chef America (Food)
Another limited series that proved to be popular enough to make a full series that is starting in January. A the campiness of the Japanese version of the show and with the absolute coolness of Alton Brown as the commentator. Yes life is good. The new series retains a few Iron Chefs from the mini-series and adds an Iron Chef from the original Japanese series. Oh, and did I mention Alton Brown is on the show?

Farscape Peacekeeper Wars4. Farscape: Peacekeeper War (Scifi)
Another super cool mini-series from the now defunct series. This four hour wonder took up where the series left off. It brought back all the characters that I wanted to see, it changed the universe and the characters dramatically and made for some great TV viewing for this Scraper. I’m not sure how it played with people who didn’t watch the series but it did everything that I wanted in the resolution to the superior series.

The Amazing Race3. Amazing Race (CBS)
Yeah, I like some reality series. This one is the best. Better than Survivor. The thing that I like most about the Amazing Race is that it is more positive than the other reality shows. No voting other people off, you have to earn your place on the show. Plus you get see all kinds of cool places, deal with airline frustrations (a common theme on this list) and some pretty crazy challenges. I didn’t start watching this show until halfway through season four and I was hooked. This year brought us season five and the beginning of the season six. Everyone like Mirna and everyone is hyper annoyed by Jonathan (can you say psycho?).

Veronica Mars2. Veronica Mars (UPN)
My Buffy replacement. This show has a mysterious mythology that makes me want to watch week after week. Veronica is the smart, strong, and sassy leading female that is cut from the same cloth as Buffy Summers. Veronica, however, has the support of her father who runs a private investigation firm after he was fired as sheriff because he accused a software mogul of killing his daughter, Veronica’s best friend. All of this has made Veronica an outcast at her high school. Then there is the whole mystery of her mother’s disappearance. Here’s hoping this show remains on the air.

Lost 1. Lost (ABC)
How great is this show co-created by Alias mastermind J.J. Abrams? I am having trouble coming up with the words to express it. Who would have thought a series about some people stuck on a seemingly deserted island (well except for the unseen monster, the polar bear, the insane French woman, and the baby stealing psycho) would be so great. I mean, come on, it didn’t really work well for Gilligan or the Skipper. The think that really makes Lost work is the mystery about the events of the series and the characters (and how exactly is Locke able to walk now after being confined to a wheelchair before the crash?). As long as the creators of the series can keep the mystery going without it getting over complicated like The X-Files, I think we have a series that has legs. Oh and the fact that they hired a few Buffy scribes can’t hurt either.

And that is the best in TV for the year of 2004. At least in my opinion (which is generally right). Got a difference of opinion? Let me know in the comments or post your top 10 list on your blog, let me know and I will link to your post.

Soon to come, Top Ten of 2004: Movies.

MovableType Up and Running

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004

MT 3.14 The problems that I encountered while upgrading MovableType have been fixed and I am just getting around to taking advantage of that. (It was a permission problem as I expected.) The MovableType blogs at Cranium Leakage have been upgraded to version 3.14 and I also upgraded MT-Blacklist to version 2.03 (it has some nice new features in it including the blacklist that automatically updates once a day without me having to do anything).

Not all the kinks are worked out just yet. The POP-up comments aren’t actually showing the comments. Comments can still be viewed in the individual archives however. I also would like to add back some of the other spam blocking techniques that we were using. But all that for another day. If you see any additional problems, let me or the blog author know and we will get the crack team of techies on the case. Promise.

Meanwhile, back the ranch, the poll here at WIT?!?!? is working again. Vote again even if you already have. The old data is gone.

Here is a quick look at some things that I am working for here at WIT:

  • Top 10 List 2004: The Best in TV
  • Top 10 List 2004: The Best in Movies
  • The Worst in TV 2004
  • My thoughts on a few movies that I have seen recently: Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events and Phantom of the Opera

I’m sure that you can’t wait.

All I Want for Christmas…

Monday, December 27th, 2004

The parents of the students in my class must have an interesting problem to solve every year. What Christmas gift do you get for the teacher who has everything? Luckily, parents didn’t have to solve that question. However, from the collection of gifts that I have accumulated over the past four years, I assume that getting a gift for a male teacher presents something of a problem.

This year was no different and there were several very clever solutions to the problem.

Isn't he cute?My favorite gift was a large stuffed frog. Wait. It gets better. Add two batteries and squeeze the frog and it begins vibrating! That frog gives some pretty wonderful massages. Perfect for the over worked teacher! This gift wasn’t only a hit with me, several other teachers are wanting one too. In fact, a certain teacher actually stole the frog and took him home. I searched all over my classroom for over an hour searching for it. Thankfully, the frog was returned to me.

I also received a frog fleece blanket, mint chocolate frogs, a singing frog (he sings Jingle Bells), one of those magnets that have the little pieces of metal that you can “sculpt” into different things (the metal pieces are in the shape of frogs), a hyper cool Christmas tie (no frog on it though), quite a few coffee mugs, a vase, and that is just to name a few.

The oddest gift I got, and I will get a picture of it when I get back to school and post it, is kinda tough to describe. It is a decorative item that I guess is supposed hang on the wall. It has a pair of cowboy boots with a gun belt beside the boots. To top it off it is accented with red chillies around the wire that the boots hang on. The student that gave it to me was very proud of it, so right now it is sitting on my desk. It has gotten several odd looks from adults.

I also got several gift cards to area restaurants and video rental places. I don’t care what people say! I love gift cards.

I am quite thankful for the generosity shown by these families.

From my family I got a wireless keyboard and mouse (one from Microsoft that has a mouse wheel that not only scrolls vertically but horizontally as well) for my Mac. I hope that it plays nicely with my wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard for my PC.

Yes! It is FUN!!!!!From part of the Cranium Leakage gang, I got a new game that has already provided hours and hours of fun, SceneIt! SceneIt is a board game that comes with a DVD that contains movie clips and questions about movies. Team go around the board answering questions from both cards and the DVD. In the MyPlay DVD questions, players normally view a clip from a movie and then answer a question. Some questions can be answered by closely watching the clip others require knowledge not in the clip. The AllPlay questions are quite fun. All players play in a variety of games on the DVD. The player who rolled is trying to continue their turn by being the first to correctly answer the puzzle, the other player are trying to beat the roller to end their turn. It is quiet a blast but good luck finding the game, Le Renard searched high and low for one of the expansion pack to find everywhere sold out of the game. I will be getting the TV SceneIt! next. I just noticed that you can even play an online version of the game here. WARNINGS: Broadband connection suggested and be forewarned the game is quite addicting.

Plus I got a post card wishing the Cranium Leakage gang a Merry Christmas. It was the thing that I needed to pick me up after all the issues that have crept up in the change over. It was greatly appreciated. Thanks Flip!

Did you get your two front teeth?

Festival of Carols Week 4.3

Saturday, December 25th, 2004

Coming to the end of the season.

I hope all WIT readers are have a great Christmas.

Our last carol of Christmas season 2004.

Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
while fields and floods,
rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

It's a Christmas Kitty! No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessing flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of His righteousness,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders, wonders of His love.

Merry Christmas!

Festival of Carols Week 4.2

Friday, December 24th, 2004

Wondering where week the first carol for week four is? It is at Spare Change.

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Savior, is born!
Christ the Savior, is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas!

Your Christmas is Most Like: The Muppet Christmas Carol

You tend to reflect on Christmas past, present, and future…
And you also do a little singing.

What Movie Is Your Christmas Most Like?

That is a good movie.

Bonus WITTy points for those who can name the Muppet character who is quoted in the title of the post.
