Take Me to the Movies
Wednesday, March 30th, 2005
For quite some time I had been eying Netflix. I think most people are familiar with with Netflix but if you aren’t let me give you the scoop. For a monthly fee, you can go onto Netflix’s site and choose a bunch of DVDs that you want to watch. They send you three of your movies in the mail you watch them, take as long as you like and then you send them back in the provided, postage paid envelope. When they get that back they send the next movie in your list to you. Pretty sweet deal if you can keep the movies moving.
Recently Blockbuster started a similar deal with two differences, it was cheaper and it included each month two in-store movie or game rentals. That pretty much did if for me and I signed up for it last month. Since then, I have really enjoyed the service. I have my queue filled with movies and TV series that I want to see. I get the DVDs in the mail, watch them when I find the time (usually on the weekends) and then send those suckers back. The added bonus of those in-store rentals has allowed me to rent a few X-Box games that have been fun (even though I haven’t had the chance to play them very much). Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was both fun (especially after I found the cheat codes on the Internet) and educational. A few of the movies that I have seen through this program include (with my grade and thoughts):
- Wicker Park [WS] (2004) - A- A trippy ride of a movie. I enjoyed the disjointed story telling method.
- Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again (2004) B- Very funny in parts but much more crude than the first.
- Village [WS] (2004) I liked this much more the second time around.
- Cellular [WS] (2004) B- A fun, mindless little thriller. It was interesting that the school in this movie shared the same name with the building that I work in. We don’t have the little security cars though.
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [WS] (2004) C+ You have to be in the mood for a noir sci-fi movie to enjoy this one.
- So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993) B+ One funny flick. Mike Meyers has the proto-form of several of his Austin Powers characters in the movie.
- Matrix Revolutions [WS] (2003) I liked the ending much more this time around but all that Mech battle stuff in the core is a bore and an offense to my intelligence.
- Saved (2003) F Makes some valid commentary on the “Jesus Culture” but is over shadowed by its new “gospel” that the movie tries to create. Basically the movie would have us believe that Jesus just wanted us to feel good. Blech!
Got any movie suggestions for me? I only have 9 movies in my queue. Let me know in the comments.
Class dismissed!
