Take Me to the Movies

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

MoviesFor quite some time I had been eying Netflix. I think most people are familiar with with Netflix but if you aren’t let me give you the scoop. For a monthly fee, you can go onto Netflix’s site and choose a bunch of DVDs that you want to watch. They send you three of your movies in the mail you watch them, take as long as you like and then you send them back in the provided, postage paid envelope. When they get that back they send the next movie in your list to you. Pretty sweet deal if you can keep the movies moving.

Recently Blockbuster started a similar deal with two differences, it was cheaper and it included each month two in-store movie or game rentals. That pretty much did if for me and I signed up for it last month. Since then, I have really enjoyed the service. I have my queue filled with movies and TV series that I want to see. I get the DVDs in the mail, watch them when I find the time (usually on the weekends) and then send those suckers back. The added bonus of those in-store rentals has allowed me to rent a few X-Box games that have been fun (even though I haven’t had the chance to play them very much). Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was both fun (especially after I found the cheat codes on the Internet) and educational. A few of the movies that I have seen through this program include (with my grade and thoughts):

- Wicker Park [WS] (2004) - A- A trippy ride of a movie. I enjoyed the disjointed story telling method.
- Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again (2004) B- Very funny in parts but much more crude than the first.
- Village [WS] (2004) I liked this much more the second time around.
- Cellular [WS] (2004) B- A fun, mindless little thriller. It was interesting that the school in this movie shared the same name with the building that I work in. We don’t have the little security cars though.
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [WS] (2004) C+ You have to be in the mood for a noir sci-fi movie to enjoy this one.
- So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993) B+ One funny flick. Mike Meyers has the proto-form of several of his Austin Powers characters in the movie.
- Matrix Revolutions [WS] (2003) I liked the ending much more this time around but all that Mech battle stuff in the core is a bore and an offense to my intelligence.
- Saved (2003) F Makes some valid commentary on the “Jesus Culture” but is over shadowed by its new “gospel” that the movie tries to create. Basically the movie would have us believe that Jesus just wanted us to feel good. Blech!

Got any movie suggestions for me? I only have 9 movies in my queue. Let me know in the comments.

Which X-Men are You?

You scored as Iceman. Codename:Iceman
Full Name: Robert “Bobby” Drake
Mutant Powers: Ability to freeze the water in the air and shape the ice into different forms.

Iceman was always the joker, the class clown among the X-men, especially as a member of the original Five. After the New X-men rescued the original X-men from the mutant island Krakoa, Iceman and the other original X-men left the group. And after some time with the Champions ( founded by Angel, one of the other original X-men), he disappeared from the mutant scene for some time.

He rejoined the X-men when Jean Grey did. After a while, he began to display more and more of his powers, and also more of his past was revealed. For example, his father was a man filled with prejudice and hatred for people he thought of as abnormal, such as black people, orientals, or people from other religions and cultures. Of course, it included mutants as well.

As time passed, Robert began to show a bigger controll over the shapes and forms of his created ice-objects. But the biggest change appeared after the White Queen took over Drake“s body. She showed that he could take bullets without dying, transform into a semi-frozen water state among other things. As he regained control of his body, Bobby started to train to use his new-found powers, realising that the prejudice his father fealt for him never actually let Robert be all that he could.

Isaiah 53

Sunday, March 27th, 2005

Isaiah 53 (HCSB):

Who has believed what we have heard?
And who has the arm of the LORD been revealed to?

He grew up before Him like a young plant
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no form or splendor that we should look at Him,
no appearance that we should desire Him.

He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.
He was like one people turned away from;
He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses,
and He carried our pains;
but we in turn regarded Him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.

But He was pierced because of our transgressions,
crushed because of our iniquities;
punishment for our peace was on Him,
and we are healed by His wounds.

We all went astray like sheep;
we all have turned to our own way;
and the LORD has punished Him
for the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter
and like a sheep silent before her shearers,
He did not open His mouth.

He was taken away because of oppression and judgment;
and who considered His fate?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
He was struck because of My people’s rebellion.

They made His grave with the wicked,
and with a rich man at His death,
although He had done no violence
and had not spoken deceitfully.

[10] Yet the LORD was pleased to crush Him,
and He made Him sick.
When You make Him a restitution offering,
He will see [His] seed, He will prolong His days,
and the will of the LORD will succeed by His hand.

He will see [it] out of His anguish,
and He will be satisfied with His knowledge.
My righteous servant will justify many,
and He will carry their iniquities.

Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion,
and He will receive the mighty as spoil,
because He submitted Himself to death,
and was counted among the rebels;
yet He bore the sin of many
and interceded for the rebels.

Verse 10 sounds very harsh on just a cursory reading of this passage.

Trekkie or Trekker?

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Also stolen from {The Bayer Family Blog}:

Trekkie Appreciator
Survey Says…
You don’t mind Star Trek and have obviously watched a couple of episodes or movies, but you don’t live or breathe the world. Not to bad! You’ve managed to tread the fine line between sci-fi buff and Star Trek nerd (otherwise known as the difference between enjoying Star Trek for its entertainment value and running around with a batleth quoting Klingon battle poetry).
PS Don’t forget to rate this test!

My test tracked 1 variable How you compared to other people your age and gender:
You scored higher than 79% on Trekkies

I am suprised I didn’t score as Star Trek Freak or something.

Live long and prosper.

First Job

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

This meme found at Sisters’ Weblog.

I didn\'t love it.1) What was your very first job where you received a paycheck?
Ah, I think that would be my tenure at McDonalds.

2) How old were you?
16 or 17. I have tried to block these memories.

3) Did the job require you to wear a uniform? - take a moment and describe?
Yes. A purple shirt with the golden arches and black pants. I think for awhile I got to wear a t-shirt that had the Flinstones on it, or some other movie tie-in.
no uniform

4) How long did you keep your first job?
I think two years. That sounds like a long time but when you consider that I only worked Saturday mornings and half the time not even then, it wasn’t all that many hours. It was not my favorite job.

5) When you left your first job was it because you quit or were you fired?
Quit. Finally.

6) What was your second job?
My second job was at Maremac State Park. I handled all the money and deposits for campgrounds. I also handled most of the reservations. I worked in the visitor’s center in the office but occasionally I would cover the front desk in the VC. I also handled all correspondence concerning the campground and any other jobs as they came up. It was a good job that I enjoyed.

7) Were you ever “counseled” about your performance on a job? What for?
The finer points of how many fish filets I should have in the heating drawer and was told once that I didn’t put enough salt on the fries but that is about it.

And you?

Spotlight

2. To focus attention on. -Thank you Answers.com

So Blog of the Month died. It wasn’t monthly so I have changed the name of the category to BlogSpotlight. I will focus attention on some blogs that I have been enjoying and I won’t have a schedule to adhere to.

{Inkblots}
Former contributer to WIT moved out to here own blog awhile back. The result has be great. Anna’s wit and knack for writing clearly shines through on Inkblots. If you want to read a well written blog that is funny, look no further.

{A Series of Inconsequential Events}
Events is a newer read for me. It makes me sad that I haven’t been with this excellent edu-centric blog. Not only do Ginny’s stories make me laugh but I’m there. Many times while reading her blog I get a feeling of deja vu. I wonder if she if following me around during the school day. Our experiences are so similar it can be spooky.
