The TV season has come to an end and with the end of the seasons come all the season and series finales. Lots of revelations, marriages, pregnancies, and cliff-hangers. In this edition of Upgrade/Downgrade I take a look at the finales that I think worked and which ones didn’t. In the course of discussing these shows, I might drop some spoiler bombs. This is your spoiler warning. Don’t read if you don’t want to know. In no particular order:
Upgrade - Smallville (Commencement) Smallville really needed an episode like this. Everything else this season seems to have been a poor excuse to get Clark and Lana in the least amount of clothes possible. I am also pleased to see the Lana as some link to the ancient past who was being tracked by the evil mother of her ex-boyfriend. That storyline was such a bore. This epi also gave us some cool foreshadowing. Could the crystal that we see Clark throwing in the final moments of the show be the beginnings of the Fortress of Solitude?
Upgrade - Everwood (Where the Heart Is) Papa, Andy, realizes that the thing that he wanted to accomplish when he moved to Everwood have really all been failures. He considers moving to Chicago. This epi is also notable because the sometimes whiny Ephram is wholly absent. The last five episodes of this season have been excellent dealing with revelation of several secrets and dealing with Rose Abbott’s cancer. From what I have read, Ephram may not reappear for awhile.
Downgrade - Alias (Before the Flood) I have never been so disgusted with a TV series. For the past four years, Alias has slowly and expertly building up the Rembauldi mythology. Are the prophecies true? What does the Rembauldi device do? The only really good episodes this season were the ones dealing with Rembauldi. That is until this steaming pile of crap episode. They want my to believe that all the Rembauldi mythology that I have been so carefully following boils down to… no, wait for it… not yet… a FRIGGIN’ zombie movie?!?!? And a bad one at that.
Upgrade - The last two minutes of Alias. Nice cliffhanger though. It actually made me jump out of my chair.
Upgrade - 24 (5:00 am-6:00 am and 6:00 am-7:00 am) These two episodes brought an excellent conclusion to the best season of 24. The aspect that I enjoyed the most about these episodes is the conclusion that it brought to the most interesting plot element of the season, the invasion of the Chinese Embassy. Now how are they going to get Jack out of hiding for next season?
Downgrade - Lost (Exodus Parts 2 and 3) I have read many interview with series co-creator (and writer of these two episodes) Damon Lindelof where he said that it was important to reveal some secrets to keep the audience interested. He didn’t do that in this three part conclusion to the season. Now don’t get me wrong, the show was well scripted, it was exciting, well acted but it didn’t answer ANY of the nagging questions about the island and the castaways. Sometimes I think the meetings that they have to discuss the story line goes something like this:
Writer 1: Oooooo! Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a rabid Koala bear attack someone?
Writer 2: That would be awesome. No one would expect that!
Writer 3 (the voice of reason): Wait, that makes no sense. None!
Writer 1: So?
Writer 2: That would be so cool!
I was also disappointed that they dispatched or rather blew away my new favorite character. I was kinda hoping that he was going to stick around for next season. In short the episode was excellent but disappointing.
Upgrade - Veronica Mars (Leave it to Beaver) This season finale was everything that Lost’s finale wasn’t. This episode answered all the nagging questions. It solved the season long mysteries and it did it in a satisfying and action packed way. This episode helped cement Veronica Mars as my favorite new series of the season. (Sorry Lost). If you didn’t watch this series, you should be looking for the DVD collection of season 1.
Neutral - Star Trek Enterprise (”These are the Voyages”) It has been a good season. I would say that Enterprise was the most improved series of the season. The new writers focused on showing the beginnings of the Federation. Much has been said about the series finale and none of it very positive. Even cast members have bad mouthed this episode. I however, don’t think it was deserved. The episode is actually very unique though it can be a bit confusing getting a hold of the two different time lines that are going on in the show (one six years after the last episode of Enterprise and the other takes place during The Next Generation episode The Pegasus). The scenes on the Enterprise D made me feel at home. All and all, an excellent episode, not a good series ender.
Do you have any upgrades or downgrades?
Class dismissed!
