Only a Sith Deals in Absolutes

Monday, May 30th, 2005

I have viewed several movies recently. Here is the short of it (and your friendly spoiler warning):

  • SpongeBob SquarePants. This was my second viewing. It is just fun. Cause… I’m a Goofy Goober, yea! You’re a Goofy Goober, yea! We’re all Goofy Goobers, yea! Goofy, goofy, goofy, goofy, goofy! A-
  • Finding Neverland. One of the first movies that I have liked Johnny Depp in since… well 21 Jump Street and that isn’t even a movie. Even more amazing, the kids featured in the movie had the acting chops to keep up. As with most historical fictiony movies and/or plays like this, I did a little research to see how much of the movie is true. For the most part it is. The movie fails to mention that Barrie actually forged his name as guardian of the children in the will. The movie also skipped over the unfortunate end of three of the five boys. All that really has no bearing on how much I enjoyed the movie… A.
  • Hotel Rwanda. This is a powerful movie and Cheadle did an amazing job portraying Paul. The whole situation is too much for me to get my head around, but the movie was amazing. A
  • I also made the boneheaded choice to go see a midnight showing of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. Much has been written about the movie and I couldn’t add much… my opinion. It wasn’t as bad as Episodes 1 and 2 and it wasn’t as good as Episodes 4 and 5, but it was probably better than 6. I watched a documentary on the making of A New Hope and I remember the actors complain that Lucas’s only direction that he gave them was faster and more emotion (I don’t think that is the word that he used though) and it makes me wonder, what happened to that philosophy? With the exception of Ian McDiarmid (Darth Sideous) and Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan) the acting was on a whole sub par. There has been much hand wringing about the political nature of the first two movies, which I personally enjoyed. It shows that Sideous is not only able to whip on Jedi booty but he is intelligent as well. My biggest issue beside the deplorable “romance scenes” and acting was the movies insistence that we should feel sorry for Anakin and by proxy Vader. I don’t want to feel sorry for Vader. I want Vader (especially the helmeted version) to just be pure evil. The concept of good and evil was one thing that set the original Star Wars apart from other movies of the time and Lucas lost sight of that. The scene of the helmeted Vader learning that he supposedly killed his wife and then yells, “Noooooooo!” is just way to cheesy and not what I want to see Darth Vader doing. If they would have moved that dialog to before the transformation with the charred and defeated Vader I think it would have had more emotional resonance and not been as nearly cheesy and as a bonus, I don’t have to feel sorry for the suited up Vader. Now that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the movie, because I did. It connected to the later (or earlier) three films and it made me to want and watch movies 4, 5, and 6 for the trillionth time. I guess the film was successful after all. C

Here are the movies that I have at bat for the the coming summer months:

Look and Feel

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

I have been playing around with a new theme from WordPress 1.5 and it is now the default theme. If you prefer the old theme, do not dispair! In the sidebar there is a new section called Look and Feel that has a drop down menu. If you like the old theme, feel free to choose BionicJive from that menu and all the little hamsters that are powering my site will change the design back for you! Amazing what those hamsters can do these days.

The new theme, Obsidian 2.0, is mostly functional with the exceptions of the links at the top of the page. I have yet to create content for those pages. I will be getting them online sometime soon. Comments, critisms, and yelling at me for the change may be done in the comments. Fire away! (Just kidding, you all have been quite forgiving with my increasingly more frequent design changes.)

Sunday Brunch XLIV: Dining Out

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

“The murals in restaurants are on par with the food in museums.” -Peter DeVries

1) Do you enjoy eating out and why?
Ummm yeah. I consider it a hobby. Eating out lets you experience all kinds of great food and as long as you aren’t going out by yourself you get to have some good fellowship with those that you are with. Really what more could you ask for?

2) Where is your favorite restaurant?
The list changes every single day. I like all kinds of restaraunts. It would probably be faster to name those I don’t like. Lion’s Choice and Arby’s because they serve roast beef and I don’t like roast beef. I will also skip Craker Barrel because I ordered a sandwich from there once and there was still wax paper in it. I do hold a grudge with eating establishments. I also do not Chili’s for no apparent reason. I also hate Mazzio’s because, well that a really long story and I might have told it here before. I will have to search around. {Anna} will probably remember if I told that story.

3) What are your standards for tipping?
No less than 10% unless the service really sucked. The better the service the larger the tip. Pretty simple really. No tipping at “workaraunts.”

4) Do you have one entree, appetizer or dessert that you specifically go out to get at a restaurant from time to time?
Yes. I always have Tiramisu from the Olive Garden, normally preceeded by soup, salad, and breadsticks. Whenever I go to Joe’s Crab Shack, I most normally get crab legs. Those are the only two places that I can think that I have to get a menu item everytime I go there.

5) Describe a horrific experience that you had while dining out.
The most recent would be an experience that {Pressed} and I had. We couldn’t decide where to go. Finally a new BBQ place in town called Studebakers. I had been there once just after it opened. Menu items were really pricey but the food was alright. I warned Pressed about his impending sticker shock and we entered. The food was expensive but we stuck with it. I had to change my mind several times while I was standing there because the kitchen kept running out of food! “Sorry, we just ran out of that!” “Don’t have that either.” “Try something else.” “Let me check and see if we have any baked potatos.” Finally after ordering it was Pressed’s turn. He wanted the same thing as me, a pork steak with a baked potato. He ordered just as a lady came out from the kitchen. “Don’t sell any more pork steaks, we just ran out.” “Sorry. We just ran out.” Pressed of course was stunned. He turned to me and said, “Get your money back we are leaving.” It of course took and good seven minutes to get my money back but I did. Needless to say we won’t be returning there.

Sunday fun:

Dogbert Tech Support

There were many days last school year that I sounded exactly like Dogbert in my job as Tech Contact for my building. I have been known to mercesly take old hardware equipment out of teacher’s rooms. It really needed to be tossed, but they never seem to believe me. So I get to be the bad guy. A role I don’t play too much.

It Just Needs to Be Done

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

Again, sorry…

Look at what’s happened to me
I can’t believe it myself
Suddenly I’m on top of the world
Shoulda been somebody else

CHORUS:
Believe it or not I’m walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me
Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true

CHORUS

Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me

There I feel better. WIT points for the first person to name that TV show.

Then I know if my comments are working.

Upgrade/Downgrade IV: Finale Edition

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

Up the Down StaircaseThe TV season has come to an end and with the end of the seasons come all the season and series finales. Lots of revelations, marriages, pregnancies, and cliff-hangers. In this edition of Upgrade/Downgrade I take a look at the finales that I think worked and which ones didn’t. In the course of discussing these shows, I might drop some spoiler bombs. This is your spoiler warning. Don’t read if you don’t want to know. In no particular order:

Upgrade - Smallville (Commencement) Smallville really needed an episode like this. Everything else this season seems to have been a poor excuse to get Clark and Lana in the least amount of clothes possible. I am also pleased to see the Lana as some link to the ancient past who was being tracked by the evil mother of her ex-boyfriend. That storyline was such a bore. This epi also gave us some cool foreshadowing. Could the crystal that we see Clark throwing in the final moments of the show be the beginnings of the Fortress of Solitude?

Upgrade - Everwood (Where the Heart Is) Papa, Andy, realizes that the thing that he wanted to accomplish when he moved to Everwood have really all been failures. He considers moving to Chicago. This epi is also notable because the sometimes whiny Ephram is wholly absent. The last five episodes of this season have been excellent dealing with revelation of several secrets and dealing with Rose Abbott’s cancer. From what I have read, Ephram may not reappear for awhile.

Downgrade - Alias (Before the Flood) I have never been so disgusted with a TV series. For the past four years, Alias has slowly and expertly building up the Rembauldi mythology. Are the prophecies true? What does the Rembauldi device do? The only really good episodes this season were the ones dealing with Rembauldi. That is until this steaming pile of crap episode. They want my to believe that all the Rembauldi mythology that I have been so carefully following boils down to… no, wait for it… not yet… a FRIGGIN’ zombie movie?!?!? And a bad one at that.

Upgrade - The last two minutes of Alias. Nice cliffhanger though. It actually made me jump out of my chair.

Upgrade - 24 (5:00 am-6:00 am and 6:00 am-7:00 am) These two episodes brought an excellent conclusion to the best season of 24. The aspect that I enjoyed the most about these episodes is the conclusion that it brought to the most interesting plot element of the season, the invasion of the Chinese Embassy. Now how are they going to get Jack out of hiding for next season?

Downgrade - Lost (Exodus Parts 2 and 3) I have read many interview with series co-creator (and writer of these two episodes) Damon Lindelof where he said that it was important to reveal some secrets to keep the audience interested. He didn’t do that in this three part conclusion to the season. Now don’t get me wrong, the show was well scripted, it was exciting, well acted but it didn’t answer ANY of the nagging questions about the island and the castaways. Sometimes I think the meetings that they have to discuss the story line goes something like this:

Writer 1: Oooooo! Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a rabid Koala bear attack someone?

Writer 2: That would be awesome. No one would expect that!

Writer 3 (the voice of reason): Wait, that makes no sense. None!

Writer 1: So?

Writer 2: That would be so cool!

I was also disappointed that they dispatched or rather blew away my new favorite character. I was kinda hoping that he was going to stick around for next season. In short the episode was excellent but disappointing.

Upgrade - Veronica Mars (Leave it to Beaver) This season finale was everything that Lost’s finale wasn’t. This episode answered all the nagging questions. It solved the season long mysteries and it did it in a satisfying and action packed way. This episode helped cement Veronica Mars as my favorite new series of the season. (Sorry Lost). If you didn’t watch this series, you should be looking for the DVD collection of season 1.

Neutral - Star Trek Enterprise (”These are the Voyages”) It has been a good season. I would say that Enterprise was the most improved series of the season. The new writers focused on showing the beginnings of the Federation. Much has been said about the series finale and none of it very positive. Even cast members have bad mouthed this episode. I however, don’t think it was deserved. The episode is actually very unique though it can be a bit confusing getting a hold of the two different time lines that are going on in the show (one six years after the last episode of Enterprise and the other takes place during The Next Generation episode The Pegasus). The scenes on the Enterprise D made me feel at home. All and all, an excellent episode, not a good series ender.

Do you have any upgrades or downgrades?

I just found the Bunny Suicides site. I find it morbidly funny (and a bit of an in-joke that most of you won’t get). Here is my favorite bunny suicide:

What would cause a bunny to do this?
Dead bunny.

*If you are having trouble reading the image, the bunny ordered Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
