Prison Break: Fact or Fiction

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Prison BreakIn the most recent episode of Fox’s fast paced serial drama, Prison Break, escaped prisoner David “Tweener” Apolskis managed to travel from Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri. Being somewhat familiar with St. Louis, I made some notes on what was fact and was was fiction about St. Louis.

Fact

  • The driver’s license that Tweener stole from the unsuspecting St. Louisian is what an actual Missouri Driver’s License looks like.

Fiction

  • Never seen a bus station like that in St. Louis.
  • The gentleman standing behind Tweener in line for a ticket wears a St. Louis Tech shirt. Later in the episode Tweener visits the St. Louis Tech campus to find a ride to Utah. No such place exists.
  • Tweener gets nervous about a man reading The St. Louis Courier newspaper. Though there have been several attempts, St. Louis is basically a one newspaper town, the St. Louis Post Dispatch. No St. Louis Courier.

He couldn’t stop by the Arch?

That’s the truth and I’m stickin’ to it.

Shopping List *A Must Read*

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

After taking her class to the school library, one of my fellow third grade teachers had a student come up with a piece of paper that he or she had found in a library book. Evidently the last student who checked out the book last year had used the slip of paper as a bookmark. It was probably just a piece of paper that was sitting around the house and the child picked it up to mark the place in the book. The teacher looked at the slip of paper. It was a receipt from Wal-Mart. Even more interesting than that was what the mystery person had purchased. A glance at the receipt revealed a person who was under a little stress. Naturally, I scanned the receipt. Click the thumbnail below to view a large version of the image.
Stress much?

Oh, that is going in the book I write! Classic.

Another Fine Mess

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Aren’t I the neglectful blog owner? This has been quite a period of silence and I apologize for that. Let me assure you that time and energy that would have been used on WIT?!?!? has been redirected to important things like the first weeks of school.

Last year my building was in a quite a messy state at the beginning of the school year, what with the incomplete building addition and all. I was sharing a room with the art teacher and I wasn’t the only class in creative locations. That whole experience seems like it was a school year unto itself but it really was part of last year. Everyone was excited to be able to start this school year without the horrible interruption of construction. If wishes were horses…

We weren’t that lucky. You see, this year was my building’s turn to have the roof redone, a job that was desperately needed. The roofing company was supposed to start mere weeks after school finished last school year. If that had actually occurred, I think it would have been very likely that they would have been finished by day one of this school year. However, the roofers didn’t start then. They didn’t start until near the end of July and by the time it was time to school to start they had barely completed just one wing of the building. Thankfully, those where were displaced last year due to construction were unaffected this year (we had a new roof).

This year we started with two teachers being moved to temporary classrooms however we quickly discovered that the rooms around the rooms that were evacuated were not fit for a learning environments because of pounding, shaking ceilings, cussing workers and a nauseating tar odor. Trouble is we were out of extra rooms so we now we have two classes sharing a room, a class on the gym stage and a class in the computer lab next door to me. What a mess!

That, however is not the only mess at school. My fellow third grade teachers and I didn’t escape getting a little messy ourselves. When I got my first class list in late July (about the same time they started on the roof) I had 22 students in my class. A week later 26 which is fine because I have 13 computers which is enough for 26 students. Then I got to 27 students as did the other teachers. Now I had a problem and so did the district because the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has set the minimum standard for classroom size at 27 with a desirable standard of 22 in the third grade classroom. We were hoping that an additional teacher would be hired. We had our open house. I had a really good turn out, I only had two or three students not show, the other teachers had between 5 and 9 students not show. The next day our principal asked us to call students who did not come to open house to be sure that they were still going to be enrolled in our school. I got all but one of my missing students in the phone. The other teachers had similar experiences. We were then informed that one of the first grade teachers was going to have to move to third grade and that we had to create a new class quickly so that parents could be notified as soon as possible. Making the new class was easy for the other teachers. They just put the kids that didn’t show up to open house in the new class. I didn’t have that option. I somehow had to give up four or five students that I had already met. In the end there was no choosing, I had to do it randomly. It wasn’t because I didn’t trust the new teacher but as soon as I met the students there was an implied relationship and expectation there. It was an extremely difficult situation that I don’t want to have to face again.

Thankfully I had my classroom done well before the beginning of school so I was able to help move classrooms at the last minute.

School started and I really like my class. I have mentioned here before of the pattern that seems to have developed: a class that is more difficult to deal with, then a well behaved class and it alternates back in forth like that. Last year I had a good class but in the self management area… well, they weren’t earning any gold stars. This year’s class seems to be very good at self managing which is a good thing since I am implementing the use of computers in the class.

Despite the messy beginning, this is going to be a good year. At least for me.

Book It! Again

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

My friend Ganns tagged me for this awhile back. I have done it before but this time I have some books that don’t have Captain Underpants in the title.

1. Grab the nearest book.

I have two books that are equidistant from me. Oddly enough one of them, Eugene Peterson’s The Message Remix: The Bible in Contemporary Language is the book that Ganns had next to him. Thankfully I have a second book and that is the one I will use. It is called The Unfinished Soul by Calvin Miller.

2. Open the book to page 123 and find the fifth sentence.

“Thank Him for Republicans if you are a Democrat, and for Democrats if you are a Republican.” From a poem called The Old 100th Revisited Again.

3. Post the text of the next three sentences on your blog along with these instructions.

“Thank Him for your weaknesses that keep you ever turning to Him for strength.

Thank the Lord!

Come before His presence with singing!

4. Don’t you dare dig for that ‘cool’ or ‘intellectual’ book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

Promise. This is what was there.

5. Tag three people.

Okay. Feel no obligation and if you aren’t tagged participate anyway. Pressed, Tim, and Bryan.

Summer is Over?

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Well it has been for awhile but today makes it official.

I am off for the first day of the school year with my new kiddos.

The past week has been wacky, exhausting, confusing, frustrating, exciting, crazy, and messy and I promise I will share when I can sit down without falling asleep within five minutes of my bum touching the chair.

Your prayer is always desired. Thanks in advance.

Oh and here it comes…

Wait for it…

Up the Down Staircase

WIT graded A-Upgrade: Monster House. What a wonderful movie. I really enjoyed it. The movie is an animated horror movie kinda geared for the pre-teen audience. Probably the most interesting thing about the movie is the direction. This movie has the most interesting camera angles and camera movements of any computer animated cartoon that I have ever seen. That being said, this movie isn’t for younger tikes. There are some frightening moments and jump scenes that could scare younger viewers. Additionally the characters deal with issues that would be thought of a pre-teen issues. With that warning I give Monster House an A-. Might be a good rental around Halloween if it is out on DVD by then.

Ruth's Chris SteakhouseNeutral: Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Another once in a lifetime experience. Last week it was dining in a cave, this week we went a little more upscale. Actually a lot more upscale. Michael had a birthday, the big “four-oh,” and the one thing he said he wanted to do was eat at a Ruth’s Chris. Now I have been in a Ruth’s Chris before and then walked out after seeing the prices on the menu, so I had an idea of how much this outing was going to cost. I made reservations on the website (they called that day to confirm the reservation which was nice) for the six people that would be going. They had all the fancy stuff that fancy restaurants have, multiple waiters, special imported water from the Vatican, TVs in the wall above all the urinals in the men’s restroom, prices that make one poop their pants, etc. I orders the smaller Ribeye (12 ounces), a half spinach salad, and a baked potato. One way they get you is that all side items are a la carte. No “meals” in which you get to choose sides. The six of us were really rather conservative about what we ordered. The Neutral comes because the steak was excellent (simply prepared, seasoned with salt, pepper, and butter) one of the better ones that I have had so that would garner an upgrade however the prices earn a downgrade (for the six of us it cost over $200). Quality of food and price cancel each other out getting the neutral rating. It was fun for a one time experience but I probably won’t be visiting anytime soon.

Upgrade: Hell’s Kitchen and Last Comic Standing. I have enjoyed this season of both programs. Last Comic Standing has its finale tomorrow and HK ends its season next Monday. I hope that Heather wins HK and Ty wins LCS.

A programing note:  Sometime ago, I posted about a book called the Essential 55 by uber-teacher Ron Clark. I even got feedback from Ron himself. Now TNT has made a TV movie about Ron, appropriately called The Ron Clark Story. Reviews of the movie have been positive, however all reviews have mentioned that the movie does manipulated emotions and each reviewer mentioned tears while watching. Either way, I am looking forward to seeing the movie though I am sure that it is one of those movies that I will make sure I am watching alone. The movie stars one of my favorite comedic actors Chandler Bing Matthew Perry. Makes me even more excited about movie. If you want to watch it, it will first air on Sunday, August 13 at 7:00 (central) and repeated at 9:00 on TNT.
